Our Purpose
Welcome to VodouSpirit, the meeting ground of mambos and houngans from Louisiana, New York, Georgia, Florida, and Canada. We are working together to build a community for the purpose of sharing positive and accurate information about Haitian Vodou. This web site was created to educate the public about the Lwa of African Ginea. All of the houngans and mambos associated with this web site are dedicated to maintaining the Vodou in its traditional form as it has been handed down to us through Haiti. However, we respect and honor God as a multifaceted entity and recognize that not all people will share the same perspective. We encourage discussion and open debate as a means to educate and to attain common ground with others of differing points of view.
Our houngans and mambos can be available to perform various services for the general public. Initiation into the Vodou religion is also available through some of the priests associated with this web site. Although the
VodouSpirit web site exists as a
point of contact and for the purpose of disseminating accurate information on the Vodou
religion, we do not agree with, nor adhere to, the practice of
teaching via the Internet or published books as a sole methodology.
While these activities may serve as a stepping stone towards a better
understanding of the Vodou, we feel that the best way to
learn the tradition through active participation and learning directly from
elders in the tradition.
Vodou is much more than a
religion. It is a way of living in the world; an explanation
of natural law obeyed by mankind for millions of years. This way of life is the core of
our faith and the guiding principle by which we navigate both the spiritual and
the physical worlds. This is
the way of the Vodou.
